Socio-Economic Data Available from the 1990 Census

Data from the 1990 Census was extensively analyzed by Carl House during consultancies to Palm Beach County Planning Department, Enterprise Foundation, and to Overtown Neighborhood Partnerships, Inc. (funded by a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation). Two small printed documents are available from this work. A "Research Brief" compares 14 inner city areas using "Urban Key Measures" (32 data items). The "Cost of Poverty in Overtown and Dade County in 1990" reports the annual cost to the public sector for 19 neighborhoods deemed "economically healthy" with 11 neighborhoods deemed "economically unhealthy". A similar report was done for Baltimore called "The Cost of Poverty in Sandtown-Winchester and Baltimore City". The consultancy for Palm Beach County resulted in 10 volumes with extensive data on "Lagging Regions". "Lagging Regions" are areas with low income and high poverty.

The following tables report data from this work. This data needs to be put into an interactive database for easy access. This display as html tables is far less convenient than an interactive database would be.

Reports titled "Key Measures" include 25 or 32 data items. Reports titled "Database" include 985 data items. Reports which are not linked (not highlighted in the menu below) have not been put on the web yet.
