Prejudice and Enlightenment

Our Study Circle is trying to understand the origins of prejudice in hopes of finding ways of coping with it. It took us several hours of discussion to tentatively agree on these ideas, and we expect our ideas to change as we continue. More "origins of prejudice" may become articulated, and hopefully more "possibilities for enlightenment" will emerge. We are considering that this chart might be useful for us to leave behind as a product of our discussion. Our thoughts may or may not have meaning for you, but this has been our little journey. The style of this presentation is what we call a "Concept Map".

Some new discussion has come up which is clearly very relevant but which does not yet fit into the above framework. Our nation has a tradition of being a place where a people or a person can rise in economic and social status. There are many stories of immigrant mothers training their children to adapt to the dominant culture so they can fit in and prosper more readily. More recently, there is a consciousness that wants to celebrate different cultures and that sometimes will try to allow for differences that really do hamper prosperity given how our world works (Ebonics?, shaking hands?, "c.p.time", "we do what works!"). Wanting to be effective and to prosper in the milieu of our nation may be at odds with one's desire to be fully accepting and preserving of cultural differences.
